Dolphins are mammals.  They belong to a group called Ceteceans, included in this group is whales and porpoise's. There are approximately 32 Oceanic dolphins and 5 River dolphins.


What is the difference between Dolphins and a Porpoise?

Both dolphins and porpoise's are toothed cetaceans--- the dophins teeth is round when cut in half as the popoise's teeth are flat.  The other main difference is in the body style.


 


Lipotes vexillifer--Baiji --chinese river dolphins

This is the most endangered cetacean.  The chinese river dolphins have a long narrow beak, abrupt forehead and tiny eyes set up high.  This cetacean fell in numbers from 6000 in the 1950's to 400 in 1984, and now with an only estimated 5animals left.  Qi Qi, is a lone male held in capitivity.
